STARTING A NEW BUSINESS?
When I started my first business, about 20 years ago, it was an act of necessity. I was just re entering the work force after having 3 kids in 3 years. I needed a job but I also needed a flexible schedule that would allow me to manage school schedules, doctor's appointments, vacations, sick days and snow days.
There was no planning involved. I didn't write a business plan, get a small business loan or even buy office supplies. A friend had suggested that I take on some small legal matters and told me he had a connection who could get me some work. It started slow, like a drippy faucet. I had a desk in a closet, an old computer and a pretty basket to hold my files, well, my one file.
GROWING, SORT OF
It took some time, but eventually, that one matter turned into 5 cases, then 10 cases and so on. I outgrew my pretty basket and turned it in for a bigger pretty basket. I worked while the kids were at school, bought a printer and a fax machine and fielded work calls on my home phone.
I never marketed my services. It just never occurred to me. I was lucky. Work came to me word of mouth and I just took what came in the door. Sound familiar?

Since starting Elevated Strategies, I have worked with many small business owners in all different industries who are looking for ways to bring in more business, but don't have the infrastructure in place to handle more work. I'm not judging. Believe me, I understand. I was so busy trying to get my work done before the kids got off the bus, I never thought about developing systems, creating invoices, organizing files or any of the other things that go into developing a business. Eventually, I decided to invest in the business of my business and start developing plans and strategies for growth. Since then I've run, managed, started and grown a few companies. Universally, all business owners want the same thing, more customers, greater profit and maybe a day off.
